White Buildup on Hetian Nephrite: Causes and Restoration
Share
White buildup on Hetian nephrite is typically caused by mineral deposits, sweat residues, or environmental exposure to moisture and alkaline substances. Over time, these factors can lead to a dull or chalky appearance on the jade’s surface (Image 1).
To restore its luster, gently clean the nephrite using a boar bristle brush (Image 2). There are three types of Boar Bristle Brushes: Wild Boar Bristle Brush, Black Boar Bristle Brush, and White Boar Bristle Brush.
🐗 Wild Boar Bristle Brush
- Firmest bristles in the set
- Ideal for initial cleaning of new pieces
- Great for early-stage polishing—produces quick, visible results
🐖 Black Boar Bristle Brush
- Medium firmness with rich natural oil content
- Best suited for mid-stage use to accelerate color deepening and patina (包漿) development
- Balances cleaning and conditioning
🐷 White Boar Bristle Brush
- Softest and finest bristles
- Perfect for gentle maintenance and care after a piece has developed its patina
- Helps preserve and enhance surface shine
Select a suitable brush and gently brush your jade piece thoroughly.
After cleaning (Image 3), applying a very light coat of jade care oil can help maintain its smooth, polished surface and prevent future buildup.
For long-term maintenance, regularly handle and hand-play (盤) the jade with clean hands to enhance its natural sheen and preserve its smooth texture. For a step-by-step brush cleaning demonstration, refer to the video tutorial blow.
